The finish for a home kitchen will be different from the finish for a busy warehouse, so we always look at how the space is used first.

Is Your Slab Suitable for Polishing?

Not every concrete floor can be polished well. The result depends on the slab you already have. Before we start, we check:

How old and how hard the concrete is
Cracks, patches and repairs from earlier work
Old glue, paint, epoxy or sealer on the surface
Stains and oil marks
How flat the floor is

If the slab is in good shape, we’ll tell you what finish is possible. If it’s not, we’ll say so and explain your options. We would rather tell you now than surprise you halfway through.

Polished Concrete or Grind and Seal?

There are two main ways to finish a concrete floor, and people often mix them up.

Mechanically Polished Concrete

Ground and then polished in stages with finer and finer diamond pads. A hardener goes into the surface along the way. The shine comes from the concrete itself, so there is no coating on top to wear off. It takes more time, and it suits floors that get a lot of use.

Grind and Seal

A lighter option. We grind the floor smooth, then apply a sealer on top. It is quicker, and it works well for cafes, garages, workshops and jobs with a tight timeline. The sealer wears over time, so the floor will need to be resealed.

Choose Your Finish

Two choices change how your floor looks: how much of the stone shows, and how shiny it is.

How Much Stone Shows

Cream Finish

Very little stone shows. The floor looks smooth and plain.

Salt and Pepper

The surface is ground just enough to show the small stones. This is a popular choice in homes.

Full Exposure

The grinding goes deeper and shows the larger stones. What you see depends on the stones used in your slab when it was poured, so every floor looks different.

How Shiny It Is

Matte

A soft, low-shine look.

Satin

A gentle shine, a good middle option.

Gloss

A bright, reflective surface.

We can also add colour with dyes or cut patterns into the floor. If you can, look at a sample in your own lighting. Concrete can look quite different from one photo to the next.

Our Concrete Polishing Process

Site Visit

We look at the slab, measure the area and talk to you about the finish you want.

Repairs

We fill cracks, pinholes and low spots so the surface is even.

Grinding

We grind the floor to remove glue, coatings and the rough top layer. If the floor is uneven, we may need to level it first.

Hardening

We apply a hardener that soaks into the concrete and makes the surface stronger.

Polishing

We work through finer pads, step by step, until the floor reaches the sheen you picked.

Protecting the Surface

We apply a sealer or finishing treatment to help the floor resist

Cleanup and Check

We clean up and walk through the job with you.

What to Expect From Polished Concrete

We want you to know what you’re getting, so here are the honest points.

Cracks, joints and old patches don’t disappear. Polishing makes the floor smooth, but the marks in the concrete stay visible. The colour and stone pattern can change from one area to another. Concrete also feels cold underfoot in winter, and like other hard floors it can carry sound. In a home, rugs and underfloor heating help with this.

Many people like these features. They are part of what makes a polished concrete floor look like real concrete.

Slip Resistance & Wet Areas

A polished floor isn’t always slippery, and a matte floor isn’t always safe. How slippery a floor is depends on the finish and the sealer we use, and on where the floor is.

For entries, bathrooms, pool areas and outdoor spots, we choose a finish made to grip better. If you have a specific need, such as a commercial kitchen or a public walkway, tell us and we can talk through slip test results for the finish.

Dust Control

Grinding concrete makes dust, and some of it can be harmful to breathe. We connect our grinders to dust extraction machines, cover areas that need protecting and clean up when we finish. Some dust is unavoidable in this work, but it can be kept low.

Polishing a New Slab or Building

If you’re building or pouring a new slab, talk to us early. A few things help:

How Long Does It Take?

It depends on the size of the floor, its condition, how many rooms there are, and the finish you want. A small area is usually quicker than a large open floor, and a mechanically polished floor takes longer than a grind and seal. After we see the space, we’ll give you a realistic timeline.

Looking After Your Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is easy to look after. Sweep or dust mop the floor, and clean it with a neutral floor cleaner. Wipe up spills quickly, and use mats at doors to keep grit off the surface. Avoid harsh acidic cleaners, which can dull the finish.

Over time a floor may need re-buffing or resealing. How often depends on traffic and the sealer used. A busy shop will need it more often than a home.

When Polishing Isn't the Right Choice

Polishing doesn’t suit every floor. If the slab is weak, badly damaged, very uneven or covered in thick coatings, another option may work better. Depending on the floor, that could be levelling, a grind and seal finish, or a different floor covering . We’ll tell you what we honestly think, even if it isn’t a polishing job.

Can you polish my existing concrete slab?

Often, yes. It depends on how strong the concrete is, what’s on the surface and what condition it’s in. We check it first and tell you what finish is possible.

Is polished concrete slippery?

It can be, if the finish isn’t right. The grip depends on how the floor is finished and sealed. For wet areas and outdoor spots, we use a finish made for better grip.
